WHAT TYPE OF SYMPTOMS CAN I EXPECT IN THE PERI-MENOPAUSE AND MENOPAUSE?

Menopausal symptoms vary from patient to patient and can be nonexistent in those lucky patients who have no symptoms at all, to those who are plagued by constant quality of life affecting symptoms.

Most patients fall in the category in between and have some degree of symptoms. In some patients the symptoms are transient and tolerable but in others, some intervention is recommended to ameliorate the symptoms and improve the interruption in their quality of life.

The symptoms can include hot flashes and night sweats (vasomotor symptoms), insomnia, joint aches, mood changes, depression, anxiety and vaginal dryness and decrease in libido. Speak to your doctor about your symptoms and what you can do to make them better. It’s not always about medication. Sometimes there are lifestyle modifications or natural products that can be useful and effective.

IF I HAVE BAD MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS BUT DON’T WANT MEDICATIONS, WHAT CAN I DO?

That depends on the symptoms you are experiencing. If it is vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes and night sweats) you can do dietary modifications like avoiding red wine, peanuts, hot beverages, caffeinated beverages, and spicy foods. Stop smoking and start exercising and losing weight. Dress in layers so you can peel off one or two when the flash comes.

Sleep in a cool room with blankets that you can remove when a flash comes or have a fan handy that you can turn on when the need arises. Keeping an ice pack around day and night is helpful to place in the palms of your hands or under your arms to get cool quick. If mood changes are a problem, try exercise to release natural endorphins to help with mood.

As an added benefit, regular exercise can help to keep weight in check, as weight gain is also a common complaint of peri and post menopausal women. If vaginal dryness is a problem using a topical lubricant can be very useful. Using the lubricant during sex on both partners is important, and there is a wide variety of commercially available lubricants, but if you want all natural you can try coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil or vitamin E oil.

Oils are not compatible with condoms, so if you are not fully menopausal and are using a condom for birth control go with a water soluble lubricant like astroglide or KY jelly.
