I Think I'm Going Through Menopause. Do I Need My Hormone Levels Checked?

I AM 48 AND MY PERIODS ARE SKIPPING AND I THINK I AM GOING THROUGH MENOPAUSE. I WANTED TO GET SOME HORMONE LEVELS BUT MY DOCTOR SAYS ITS NOT NECESSARY. WHY NOT AND HOW WILL I KNOW IF I AM IN MENOPAUSE?

The average age of menopause in North America is 51-52.

Having said that, there are many women who go through menopause in their 40s and may who go through it in their late 50s.

Menopause is a clinical diagnosis, and not a diagnosis made by blood tests. Especially since your periods are skipping, your hormone levels will be fluctuating and what they are on today's blood draw may be very different from what they are on a blood draw next month.

By definition, you are in perimenopause due to your age and skipping periods. This can last months or years, and there is no blood test or imaging study that your doctor can do to determine when you will go through menopause and hormone levels are not recommended and will not be useful. Menopause is defined as a full year with no period.
